Because of Moseley (and some other, less important scientists in WWI), neither the US nor many European countries will put someone with a science PhD in anything resembling a combat situation. Take, for example, WWII, where they rounded up all the physicists, gave them all automatic ranks as officers in the army, and didn't let them leave the US except for the occasional physics conference in England.
