Irony...

Today there was communion as part of the Memorial Church Sunday service. I did go and receive in both species; while it is certainly the case that Protestants may not receive communion in a Catholic church, this one was certainly open to all. The ironic thing was that UChoir sang Mozart's Ave verum corpus as a communion hymn: "Hail, true body..." Sung in a church that does not believe in transubstantiation or in the Real Presence of the Eucharist.

To my understanding, the nature of the Eucharist is one of the greatest theological fault lines between Protestants and Catholics; Rev. Prof. Gomes certainly alluded to this in his sermon. I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable, though, to know what some of the other issues between Protestants and Catholics are, and frankly I'm not sure I have the greatest understanding of the Protestant theology of the Eucharist. I'm sure there are differences among different Protestant denominations as well. Anyone care to enlighten me?
