Dec. 3rd, 2004 08:11 pmThe Math 47/49 Party today was cute. The math department served abelian grapes, Zorn's lemonade, rings, and epsilon-neighborhoods in R2 and R3 (Is there anyway to display the blackboard-bold R, C, Q that are used in math for those fields?) That is, mini donuts and a Bundt chocolate cake (rings), a flat disklike carrot cake (neighborhood in R2), and donut holes (spherical neighborhood in R3). They forgot, however, something which is apparently traditional with some of the profs -- German chocolate Leibniz cookies. Oh well... I actually saw said cookies in the Co-op this evening. Math food is so great. Let me know if you care to hear the very corny algebra jokes that the first two items they served come from.
Watching Tom Whitman and the new music prof, Barbara Milewski, banging away on the bass drum and triangle in the Turkish march in Beethoven's 9th is also cute, but in a different way.
