I think everyone (in my section of 113 at least) got beaten pretty badly by the quantum midterm. It's over; Catherine will probably curve it. It hurt but whatever.

Today I went with Jimmosk and Chris to Jim's Steaks on Baltimore Pike. My first genuine Philly Cheesesteak ever. There is something special about meat grilled with onions.

Fire training was engine company operations. We took 14-1 and 14-2 out to the front drive of the UCP center (same place where I voted for the first time). We connected 14-1 and 2 to a hydrant and had 14-2 boost the pressure, and then set up the booster line and deck gun from 14-1. Spraying great jets of water is fun.

What's cool is that fire hoses are great for demonstrating conservation of momentum. We didn't use one, but apparently with a sufficiently large hose such as a 2.5 inch line flowing at high pressure the reaction force can be substantial enough to require several people being on the end of the hose to control it. Calculating the necessary force to maintain the hose in static equilibrium given its diameter and flow velocity (from which you could calculate dm/dt) would be a great Physics 7 problem.

Perhaps, too, with a sufficiently powerful hose, one could actually demonstrate the keep-the-garbage-can-in-the-air problem from Chapter 3 of Kleppner & Kolenkow.
