Jun. 7th, 2005 12:40 amThe severe weather tonight was pretty crazy - I stood at the door of ML watching the thunder and lightning for a while. I was then joined by one of my fellow student firefighters, at which point we discussed the likelihood of Swarthmore getting toned out. At that point I had already heard the sirens go off for Rutledge, and apparently things were already hectic around the county. I had hardly been back in my room a minute when, sure enough, the honker went off. I responded but didn't go since 14-1 already had a full crew; it turned out to be a case of someone actually wanting the fire company to clean out their gutter, because water was overflowing from it, leaking through an open window, and coming down to the floor below. Not to mention that all our ladders are metal and this was during a severe thunderstorm... they got out of that in a hurry. It could have been much worse; Upper Darby had a car in water with downed wires on top of it and people inside.
blaketh and I baked tonight, making a mixed whole wheat/white bread. We made a starter last night with whole wheat flour and then mixed the rest of the dough with white flour. The dough ended up a bit slacker than I'm used to, but the bread it baked has turned out quite decently. I'm not good at shaping, and this shows it, but the crust is flavorful and the crumb quite open. I got a nice steam cloud in the oven with some water splashed onto the oven floor when I put the loaves in.
