This is an extremist, homophobic Baptist preacher who seems to believe that America is doomed because of homosexuality. He and his church heckle at funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq, claiming the deaths are the wrath of God and that the fallen soldiers are doomed to Hell. This in itself is offensive to me; whether or not one agrees with the presence of American forces in Iraq, those who have died there surely deserve a dignified funeral. I would want as much if I were killed in combat, or if, heaven forbid, I were to fall through a roof or be caught in a flashover. Signs like "Thank God for IED's" are just such a perversion of Christianity that it's frightening.
Even more disturbing is the church's website, Westboro Baptist Church. It's absolutely disgusting; too much so for words. As a Catholic, I am profoundly offended by their blanket assertion that the Catholic Church is corrupt and that priests rape boys, and moreover that every Catholic is doomed to Hell.
It is utterly abhorrent and frightening the way some fundamentalists twist Christianity into hatred.
