A Harvard graduate physics student, working for David Weitz, whose work I'm certainly interested in (and who according to multiple Swat faculty is a great person to work for), was profiled by the AAAS here.

This student had published a number of high-profile papers in areas of science not related to physics, such as paleontology or archaeology, based on research he had done on the side. One of his mantras is apparently "Girls may come, and they surely may go, but a publication record is forever." Not sure I'd agree totally with that, although perhaps there is some germ of truth about what it takes to do good science...
