Why, on almost exactly the stroke of 2:00 a.m. every night for the past couple of nights, must the pipes in my room start bonking and clanging loudly?

Erm, because that's when the radiators kick on? And it'd be a lot less comfortable if they didn't?

Well, barring a sudden fire alarm at the stroke of 5 AM that is a result of the same heating schedule.

If you turn off the radiator, you can only hear clanging from other rooms, which is much less loud. Though it might make your room too cold...my room is surrounded by warm rooms/lounges and has small windows, so it gets about the right amount of heat in this weather even with the radiator off.
