So, the thesis writing has begun. I currently have a little over 2 pages: not much, but it's a start.

I think I have my LaTeX stuff more or less set up; I may decide to try to keep a separate .tex file per chapter and then use the \include or \includeonly commands. I've got a BibTeX .bib file set up and am currently planning to use the AIP bibliography style file. Emacs, I have heard, makes using BibTeX easy, but I hate the keyboard-only version I have in the terminal. Anyone know about a mouse-compatible, GUI Emacs? Also, it would be nice to not have to run LaTeX, then BibTeX, and then LaTeX twice more and xdvi to get all the references straight and see the output; surely there must be a way to automate this. Yes, I know programs like TeXShop exist, but I prefer (at the moment) to use my own standalone text editor.

If you use GNU make to manage your compilation, you just run one command to rebuild your document. It will compile only as needed to keep the references up to date; sometimes you don't need to LaTeX twice to update them.

xemacs is available from several sources, some of them even as source (rimshot). I seem to remember you use a Mac; Fink has a functionan xemacs package which I've used. Requires Apple X11 or another X Windows distribution.
