I had a conversation with the Fellowships/Prizes advisor last week. Before that I hadn't really given much thought to the possibility of applying for any of the programs, but now I'm thinking some over. It would be really, really cool to get a Fulbright to go to France for a year after graduation. Doc, alas, doesn't know any plasma people there, but I emailed my advisor from last summer and he referred me to a dusty plasma person his group has collaborated with before. Their lab does a lot of silicon particle growth stuff, some microgravity experiments (similar to things my advisor had worked on but in which I wasn't directly involved, except for borrowing some instruments from the Vomit Comet flight racks). I have two papers in stuff Trico has which I should read, and then probably I should try to email this professor. The trusty old French grammar will probably need to come out...

Et donc, "plasma poudreux" veut dire "dusty plasma."

It's going to be an absolutely crazy start of the semester if I decide to go through with applying for something like a Fulbright... between classes, research, thesis writing, and preparing my Sigma Xi/APS posters. I think, after my experience last year, I will have to do two separate ones, for with Sigma Xi you can't assume people know much about plasmas whereas it's silly to have a section devoted to 'What is a plasma?" or "The Role of Flow in Sweet-Parker Reconnection" at a poster for a meeting like APS-DPP. And... I would still love to see some kind of Tri-Co physics/astro get-together/poster session if possible... I know they're doing some interesting stuff at Haverford and Bryn Mawr (biophys, active cold atom research, nonlinear dynamics) that aren't actively being researched at Swat.

[Edit: I just realized that I'm writing about trying to do dusty plasma again, when my usericon's been my dusty plasma experiment from last summer.]

Haha, Physics in France?! It's so old-school you.

Russell and I were talking Friday about how people have changed since high school, and also how they haven't. That's why you amuse me so.

You know what I'll say abotu your plans, of course.

The sage of old was profound and wise;
like a man at a ford, he took great care,
alert, perceptive and aware.

Desiring nothing for himself,
and having no desire
for change for its own sake,
his actions were difficult to understand.

Being watchful, he had no fear of danger;
being responsive, he had no need of fear.

He was courteous like a visiting guest,
and as yielding as the springtime ice.
Having no desires, he was untouched by craving.

Receptive and mysterious,
his knowledge was unfathomable,
causing others to think him hesitant.

Pure in heart, like uncut jade,
he cleared the muddy water
by leaving it alone.

By remaining calm and active,
the need for renewing is reduced.

Short version: Take it easy, start the year right! But I am also very excited for you.
