What's killing me in these Elixir rehearsals is not the music itself. The music is not difficult -- there are passages where the bass line repeats the same note for more than a page. The tempi, however, are in places almost breakneck, and the conductor is not offering many cues. HIs style is different enough from what I'm used to that I'm having a hard time just figuring out the downbeats sometimes. Add to this the passages with sudden piu mossos and the places where a lead holds a note. For me, getting in on time and in rhythm has been a nightmare, and many places are fast enough that once you're out, it's almost impossible to get back in.
It doesn't help, of course, that rhythm is far and away my absolute worst skill in music. I'm fairly good at sight singing, but I struggle to count and maintain a steady rhythm. It also didn't help that, for much of this afternoon's rehearsal with orchestra, I was the only bass present.
From hearing the soloists, however, the show (Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, sung in English, if that wasn't clear) should be really good. People should come, it's Friday and Sunday nights at 8 pm in the lobby of Lang Music Building.
