(no subject)

At this point it seems more likely than not that I'll be living in one of the Harvard grad student dorms next year. I'm working on the paperwork for the housing lottery now. This seems to be the strangest rule:

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Drums, pianos, organs, electric guitars, violins, and cellos are not permitted. Other musical instruments may be played at a volume that does not disturb other residents. Practice rooms are available through the Music Department. Please see section on "Noise" below for additional guidelines.

One wonders why those particular instruments get singled out. I'd personally find someone practicing a trumpet or any other brass instrument way more annoying than someone playing the violin. And why the ban against violins and cellos, but not violas?

[Edit: I'm giving up, because I'm being indecisive (as usual), this time about which of the dorms I'd like to live in.]

Well, unmuted, I don't think it would be possible for a brass player to play his/her instrument at a volume that wouldn't disturb other residents. I suspect this rule is unenforced for string instruments.

Violas probably never occured to anybody.

You could also play the accordion or the bagpipes.... Or perhaps the cymbals, if they don't technically count as drums.

The cello sounds awesome...I don't see why they have anything against them. I think you should play the gongs. One of those huge Chinese gongs.
