This morning I apparently left my flash drive in the pocket of one of my shorts, which went into the washing machine. As the laundry dried, I was wondering what was bonking around in there but did not go investigate. Well, when I removed the dried clothing, there it was.

Surprisingly enough, it still works. I have opened files that were saved on it as well as copied a new one. The outside of the drive looks somewhat banged up, no doubt from being tossed around in the dryer, and the whole thing rattles disconcertingly. My current drive is only 128 MB; I have for some time toyed around with the idea of getting a new one with more capacity, but have been reluctant to spend the money. I may go ahead and get one if I see something on sale or with a rebate.

I think Walter spoke at least briefly in Solid State on the physics of flash memory, but I have forgotten the details.

Whether or not I do, this flash drive's survival has impressed me with its robustness. This is about as good as the time I was studying organic chemistry with [livejournal.com profile] blaketh my freshman year in the LPAC balcony and dropped my scientific calculator off the balcony onto the concrete floor 15 or 20 feet below. I still use that calculator to this day.
