Back in Iowa

Home was good this weekend. I was able to spend some quality time with my family, and especialy with my brother. I really do regret not being able to see them very much when I'm away at Swat or out in Iowa. I also went to see the movie "Terminal" with Russell, and we were finally able to catch up on each other's lives without the conversation spiraling into a political argument.
obcordate is still in the Phillipines, unfortunately, but I'll surely see him when I get back.
At Swat, Jessica and Makiko prepared a wonderful Southern dinner. They cooked butterbeans and okra, tilapia, hoecakes, and cheese biscuits. The recipes were from this Georgia restaurant, The Lady and Sons. I helped make the biscuits and fry the hoecakes. Everything was wonderful; I never enjoyed lima beans as much as I did. I was thrilled.
After we cleaned up from dinner, I invited Jessica and Makiko to come up to the roundsing. There, many SWILfolk had assembled, including Jim, the McNary's,
crystalpyramid,
rose_garden,
nightengalesknd. Jillian's friend
fump also was there, as were a few random people who joined us. I learned a lot of beautiful new rounds including "Der Hahn ist tot" and "By the waters of Babylon". It was a good mixture (for me at least) of new music and old favorites. This morning, while waiting in line at the security checkpoint, I started humming a couple of the rounds. I was careful not to do "There's a submachine gun" which would probably not have been good to sing in front of the TSA inspectors.
The flight was uneventful; I got an exit row seat which meant I had no seat in front of me. I was therefore able to plop my bag in front of me and put my feet up, which was delightfully comfortable. Seeing parts of Chicago with
gerbilicious85 and one of her friends was fun, too. It poured on us, and there was a lot of walking in the wrong direction and chasing down CTA subway/elevated trains, but I got to try an authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza. The Greyhound back was a bit more tolerable. Having arrived early at the terminal, I wound up getting on a bus that left half an hour before I had planned, because it should have departed several hours ago but was late! Oh well. At least on this ride, things were far less malodorous. In addition, all of my travel left me plenty of time to make progress in Anna Karenina.
Tomorrow: back to lab. It's not a good thing that I was actually joking (though not seriously) about going AWOL from my REU. But I hold out hope that things will be better; at the very least, my PI is out of town this week.
