From the minutes of a SEAS safety committee meeting, in which safety violations in various labs were reported:

Lots of liquor in office area. One hopes that no group member drinks while doing an experiment.

Our lab had a few problems, which as Safety Officer I will be working to remedy, but nothing like this.

Also in the news... hearings in federal court about the supposed link between vaccines and autism. nightengalesknd and gallian probably know way more about this than I do. Still, it seems to me that a lot of people are arguing (among other things) that "my child didn't develop autism until after being vaccinated," to which I would argue that temporal correlation does not imply causation.

and, someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this, my apparently the type of mercury compound that they believe causes autism is a different type of mercury compound than the one used in vaccines.

Yeah, because autistic kids don't show really obvious signs of autism right after they're born. In fact, they may seem to be developing quite normally and then backtrack (childhood disintegrative disorder). It seems to happen at about the same age in everyone. In the meantime, the kid has been getting shots. Why don't other parents say "you know, my child didn't start climbing on things until after being vaccinated" or "my child didn't start speaking sentences until after being vaccinated"? They just want to have enough money for the expensive autism therapy, so they figure they'll start with suing all the drug manufacturers, which unfortunately means those drug manufacturers have less money to research potential pharmacological treatments for autism...
