On the whole, it's been a pretty nice weekend.

The IC Jazz Festival was nice. Previously, I never considered myself all that fond of jazz, but I did enjoy these live performances. I was there for a while Saturday night and enjoyed walking around between the main stage in front of the Old Capitol and the smaller stages for youth, college, and local bands scattered nearby. Unfortunately, yesterday was quite a wet day, with intermittent rain.

Today, however, was a lot nicer weatherwise. I went back down to the jazz festival after mass, before going to lunch. I was back after dinner, when I heard Patricia Barber and her quartet. I particularly enjoyed her voice and her group's reliance on acoustic instruments. What I could not stand at all on Saturday night was Soulive, which was way too electronic, too loud, and used percussion excessively and tastelessly. On the whole I've enjoyed the different sounds when a band plays all together, or when individual performers go for solos or duets.

The fireworks here tonight were nice; from the front lawn of Mayflower I had a great view without having to deal with the traffic snarled on Dubuque Street. And then afterwards, from Cindy's room upstairs, a bunch of us REUers managed to see more fireworks, this time from some miles away in Coralville. Happy July 4th to all!
