Summer draws to an end... I'm feeling very weird now.

Visited maternal grandparents in Queens today. We went out for dim sum at this place that had good food but was positively crowded. The dining room was huge and the noise level from everyone there so high Dad had to shout to the waiters pushing the little carts of food around. The one interesting thing I tried were these bitter melon fried things. They're these balls of a rice dough, I guess with some bitter melon added, and some food coloring probably, for the balls were bright green. Yes, a bright, St. Patrick's Day green. At any rate they were filled with sweet black bean paste. There was maybe a hint of bitterness, which went well with the bean paste. Ah well, for otherwise bitter melon is one of my least favorite vegetables (the other probably being brussels sprouts).

We went to an Asian supermarket thereafter. I got some more tea -- Tie Kuan Yin oolong. I thought about green tea, which is probably better healthwise. But then again oolong is more strongly flavored (which helps if I'm not making tea under optimal conditions, e.g. by microwaving), and besides it's better for getting a kick on a cold morning. Also got some canned sweet bean/peanut soup, which I like for breakfast on Sundays, and some frozen steamed buns. They were giving out samples of red bean ice cream, which was pretty good. But that supermarket was so crowded I was starting to have a sensory overload... People thronging around the fish, some of which was being purchased live and whole, as is customary. Mountains of vegetables. Clearing a path for a guy coming through with a hand truck load of eggplants. Aargh.

And then the traffic back home... Anyone who's ever driven much around New York will understand what I mean when I say that we had trouble getting into the Holland Tunnel. It was at least a 45 minute wait. People were honking (despite the "Don't Honk! $350 Penalty" signs), doing crazy lane changes, blocking the box, and doing all the other things I fear about New York drivers. It'll probably be worse next week as the RNC approaches.

I need to pack but don't want to. I feel like I never gave myself much of a summer break, between my REU and trying to do Math Forum stuff afterwards. I'm not stressed now, but am uncharacteristically unmotivated.

There is someone whom I miss very, very dearly.

Going through old books, like Halcyons and old organic chemistry textbooks, in deciding which ones to bring, is somehow peaceful.

Thorton and Marion, and Griffiths, are both here. They are shiny. Especially compared to my beat-up Kleppner and Kolenkow, and Purcell.

I've picked up some bad habits just walking in NYC; I often block crosswalks in Princeton.

Then again, I actually think drivers are too nice in Princeton. I get a little ticked when a driver stops to wave me across when he has a green light and there is a don't walk sign blazing. Of course, I smile and wave to thank him, but really, I'm thinking, "Fool, I could've waited ten more seconds. You're just pissing off the fifty or so cars behind you."
