Tomorrow morning I leave with
msarcher and
mumbly_joe for North Carolina. Our first stop will be Duke in Durham, where we'll spend the night with my best friend from high school, Russell. Then on to Asheville Tuesday morning.
I was home yesterday and today. Didn't get a jot of work done, but spent some time catching up with the family. I played Starcraft with my brother yesterday... boy am I not good with computer games. Today I did a ton of baking. I made raisin bread, which appears to have come out pretty well if just a bit burned, and tried to make pitas. I'm really bad at rolling things out into thin, neat circles, so some of the pitas came out more wideish-roll like than pita-y, but they all puffed up nicely. Pitas are actually fairly straightforward; I used a King Arthur recipe which was basically a plain white dough baked at a very high temperature. Making them was pretty easy, and relatively quick (no long second rise). Someday, perhaps, I'll think about trying these with whole wheat flour, although my whole-wheat baking has not been all that successful.
Dinner with relatives was good. My cousin Jaime is starting his freshman year as an engineering student at Drexel and seems to be enjoying it. The food at the place we went (Golden City in Colmar, on the R5) was good, if the service was rather slow. Someone was having a 16th birthday party there and brought in a magician, so we got some entertainment through the wait. There's a distant cousin of mine, a baby, who had some kind of brain cyst or tumor yesterday and underwent emergency neurosurgery this morning; the report is that the surgery went well and that she's OK for now, even though the prognosis is still uncertain. She'll be in my prayers as she recovers.
Dad had a little accident today refilling an inkjet cartridge. Essentially he sprayed himself with ink in the face; at first, it looked like he had been in a fire or suddenly sprouted facial hair in spots. I helped clean up the mess in the bathroom and he did manage to make himself look presentable before we had to leave.

Inkjet cartridge refilling can be pretty dangerous. Was it one of those Self-Refill kits they always advertise on TV? I've had less-then-stallar results with those; I just buy a new cartridge now.
I hope your baby cousin is okay, too.
