Senseless violence

I just saw that the following had happened at the University of Iowa the week I was at APS-DPP:
Seashore Hall And Spence Labs Closed For Foreseeable Future After Vandalism
It appears that members of the Animal Liberation Front have clamed responsibility for this terroristic act: President Skorton Responds To ALF Claim
Seashore Hall and Spence Labs were psych buildings, with Seashore right behind Van Allen Hall, the physics building. I had to go into Seashore once because the audivisual department was in there too. One time at lunch when my advisor wasn't blabbering on about himself, he told us how it was the first University hospital building -- it definitely had a very creepy-old-medical-institution feel. He tried to explain to his two postdocs, who aren't native English speakers, what gurneys are, and how they were used to wheel away dead bodies. And he added that the physics department had acquired several of said gurneys for use as lab carts.
Given all the tragedy that has happened at Swat and elsewhere lately, one really needs to be reminded that there is still good in the world...
