Optics seminar today was pretty good. Frank's seminar style is interesting... not quite like any other prof I've had. I have at least ceased to vehemently dislike optics, as I did last spring when I had to help Physics 4 people with optics in clinic and I hadn't studied optics since high school. Still, I think the stuff we'll get to at the end of the term will be more interesting: a more thorough treatment of the interaction of light with atoms and the quantization of the electromagnetic field, with its elegant creation and annihilation operators.

Somehow I need to get myself motivated to focus on my research/thesis writing/Sigma Xi poster.

Class on a National Holiday? Aren't teachers there unionized at all? Do they get overtime pay at least? Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

During the academic year, Swarthmore honors no holidays whatsoever besides Thanksgiving. This includes things like Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and President's Day.

The teachers there make a lot more money than the teachers at most universities. They make about 1.5 times what my parents make teaching at public universities. And they get every 4th year off for their sabbatical, rather than every 7th, as is traditional at most schools. Teaching on national holidays would be a rather silly thing for them to complain about.
