Music and soup

Two great musical things about which I'm thrilled:
1. Daniel Wachs is resigning as the director of the Swarthmore College Orchestra as he's accepting a position at the Minnesota Symphony. So John Alston will be taking over direction of the SCO next semester. We'll be doing Beethoven's 9th with full orchestra and chorus.
2. Mozart's "The Mariage of Figaro" is playing next weekend in Cedar Rapids. Maybe I can find someone else who'd be interested in going. I still remember the wonderful time I had last summer when
crystalpyramid and I went to see Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." I had some of the arias stuck in my head for weeks. If I get to go, I'll be excited to hear arias like Cherubino's "Voi che sapete." It'll also be an interesting comparison with the original play by Beaumarchais, about which I wrote a long French paper this semester. It will also be an interesting comparison to Rossini's "Barber of Seville," which I was lucky to see over winter break at the Metropolitan Opera.
And finally, in keeping with
fiddledragon's posting of her soup recipes, I now offer the following that I just made.
1. Chop 3 potatoes, 2 carrots, 2 onions, and several cloves of garlic. Place in pot; add water to cover. Add salt and pepper to taste.
2. Simmer for 40-45 minutes.
This made a tasty vegetable soup. Prep time for the veggies took an hour because I'm bad with knife work. I think I oversalted it just a little, but the result is still nourishing and delicious.
